Clean heat. A clearer energy future.
Founded in Ulaanbaatar in 2025, Sparse Energy Grid brings together thermal storage, connected heat metering, and practical engineering to help Mongolia transition to cleaner, more reliable heating.
Why we started Sparse
Keeping a building warm through a Mongolian winter is essential. Yet dependence on coal and other fuels contributes to winter air pollution, while growing heat demand puts pressure on existing infrastructure. For rural facilities, access to reliable heat can also depend on fuel deliveries and distance from the grid.
We started Sparse because Mongolia’s solar and wind resources offer a different path. Making that path practical means storing renewable energy for when heat is needed and understanding how buildings actually use it. Those two challenges are at the heart of our work.
Our mission
Deliver clean, reliable heat for Mongolia through smart thermal energy storage and connected heat metering. We aim to make renewable heating practical for building owners and give operators the information they need to reduce waste and improve their systems.
Our vision
A Mongolia where homes, businesses, and communities can stay warm with renewable energy, where cleaner heating supports healthier air, and where decisions about energy are informed by clear, reliable data.
How we make it practical
Store renewable energy as useful heat
Our sand-based thermal heating solution stores energy from solar and wind for later use in space heating and hot water. It can support off-grid heating or integrate with night-time electricity for more flexible supply. Building on earlier prototype testing in Mongolia, the solution is ready for pilot deployment.
Heat-as-a-Service is our primary offer: we arrange financing, installation, operation, and maintenance to simplify the transition and lower upfront costs. Customers can also purchase the battery, with warranty and service options agreed for their project.
Give operators a clearer view of heat use
We’re developing connected metering to bring readings from compatible existing heat meters into an accessible information system. Collection at 5–15 minute intervals is designed to help operators investigate unusual demand, assess building improvements, prioritize maintenance, and plan investment.
Storage and metering each have a distinct role. Together, they connect cleaner heat supply with better-informed decisions about demand; either solution can also serve a site’s needs independently.
