Thermal Energy Storage

Store renewable energy. Deliver clean heat.

Our sand-based thermal heating solution is developed and ready for pilot deployment in Mongolia. Store solar or wind energy as heat for off-grid use, or charge with night-time electricity for flexible heating throughout the day.

Operating principle
  1. ChargeElectricity becomes heat.
  2. StoreInsulated sand retains heat.
  3. DeliverUseful heat enters the heating circuit.

Stored as heat. Delivered as heat. Not electricity returned to the grid.

  1. Charge: Electricity is converted into heat. The proposed electricity source and charging schedule are assessed for each site.
  2. Store: Heat is held in an insulated storage medium. Storage capacity and heat losses depend on the system and its operating conditions.
  3. Deliver: Stored heat is transferred to the heating system when required, within the installation’s operating limits.

This system stores and supplies heat; it is not an electricity-producing battery.

Heating solutions across Mongolia

  • Camps, lodges, homes, and rural facilities seeking off-grid heating from solar or wind energy.
  • Grid-connected buildings seeking to charge with night-time electricity and use stored heat during the day.
  • Facilities replacing or supplementing fuel-based heating with renewable heat.
  • Heating operators integrating storage into a wider heat supply system.

These are potential applications, not a list of completed projects.

What we assess before a pilot

We review heat demand, required supply temperatures, electrical capacity, tariff structure, available space, and connection to the existing heating system. A pilot should also establish the measurement plan, operating responsibilities, backup arrangements, and evaluation criteria.

Ready for a pilot

Our thermal-storage work builds on earlier sand-battery prototype development and testing in Mongolia. The solution has been developed, and we are ready to work with partners on pilot deployment. Each pilot is configured for the site’s heat demand, electricity supply, and heating connections, with measurements to guide wider deployment.

A path to renewable heat

The thermal store can turn solar and wind electricity into heating without burning fuel in the store. Off-grid installations combine renewable generation, storage, and the operating arrangements needed for the site’s winter conditions. Grid-connected sites can also use night-time charging; the renewable share of their heat depends on the electricity source.

What determines the benefit?

The value of storage depends on when electricity is available, what it costs, when heat is needed, and how efficiently the installed system operates. Any savings or emissions assessment needs a site-specific comparison with the existing heating arrangement.

Heat-as-a-Service or battery ownership

Heat-as-a-Service is our primary offer, designed for simpler operation and lower upfront costs compared with purchasing the battery. Sparse arranges financing, installation, monitoring, operation, and maintenance; you pay for heat under an agreed heat-supply contract.

If you prefer to own the battery, we also offer direct purchase with the option to arrange a warranty and service/repair package. Pricing, coverage, and responsibilities are defined for your project.
